The Mayor's Charity, TinyLife, is committed to funding medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage and providing
information to professionals and parents-to-be to ensure that every pregnancy has the best chance of a healthy outcome and a healthy baby.
TinyLife also offers practical and emotional support to ensure that parents of premature and ill babies get all the help they need.
Every parent-to-be in Northern Ireland hopes their baby will be born healthy, but sadly:
- Of approximately 24,000 babies born here each year over 1,500 are born too soon.
- Almost 900 babies spend time in a neonatal intensive care unit year.
- 80% of babies, who are born alive but die in the first 28 days of life, are born prematurely.
- On average there are two stillbirths every week in Northern Ireland.
- 50% of stillbirths remain unexplained.
- One in every five pregnancies ends in miscarriage.
The Mayor, who is very much a family man, decided to choose and raise funds for TinyLife after hearing about the wonderful work of this charity.
Councillor Ewart will endeavour to raise awareness about TinyLife and his office will undertake a number of fundraising activities during the year to raise much-needed funds for this very special charity.
The Mayor's Office is very interested to hear about initiatives from the local community that will help to raise funds for this worthy cause. Please contact the Mayor's Office on 028 9250 9331.
